Amazon’s Mechanical Turk This is a marketplace where you can request tasks requiring human intelligence-tasks from getting questions answered to writing product descriptions for you.

Fiverr It amazes me all of the things you can get from people here for just $ 5. Professional voiceovers, fast logo designs, and all kinds of writing and search engine marketing gigs are available here.

99Designs A great place to get multiple designs or logos made BEFORE choosing a provider to pay. This is valuable if you’ve ever paid someone to make a design you didn’t like.

Hatchwise This site is nearly the same as 99Designs. I’ve used them both but have no real preference. Both are worth checking out.

Etsy This is the “Ebay” of handmade goods. Many entrepreneurs and small businesses test-market new products here first to see what sells better before investing more in promoting it elsewhere.

Kickstarter The largest crowdfunding platform for creative projects and endeavors. It uses an all-or-nothing funding system, where donors’ funds will not be transferred until you reach your funding goal, and reimbursed if it isn’t.

IndieGogo, RocketHub, FansNextDoor These sites operate just like Kickstarter.

DonorsChoose Backed by Oprah Winfrey and Stephen Colbert, this site makes it easy to donate (as little as one dollar) to any one of a long list of charities, with total transparency.

8-bit funding A crowd funding site specifically for video game developers. Probably not your specialty, but see how there’s a niche for everything? Google your industry + crowdfunding and see what’s out there. Appbackr is a similar site, but is specifically for mobile phone apps.

RetailMeNot This is a site where you can get (or post) coupon codes for business services and supplies at significant discounts, like office supplies or even press release submission services.

ChaCha A question answering service you can text your questions to get answers on your mobile phone in a few minutes. It’s helpful when you’re super-busy and don’t feel like looking something up.

37signals Probably the simplest and best Customer Relations Management software I’ve seen for the price (Highrise) and also project management (Basecamp). With everyone on your team able to make and access notes, files, tasks, and emails about a customer or prospect, it makes life a lot easier.

Skype A must-download if you hire anyone overseas, for their audio or video chat feature, but also because their Instant Messaging system is just plain handy. It’s nice having a record of every conversation with someone in one place, as opposed to a bunch of archived emails.

TomsPlanner A good way to manage projects if you’re visually-oriented without having to learn to use Microsoft Project. By the way-if you’re in business, you manage projects. It allows you to list action items and schedule them in order, in a printable Gantt chart that gets everyone on the same page about who does what and when.

Quickbooks Online If you’re still using an older version of Quickbooks, consider getting the online version. The monthly cost isn’t fun but it’s worth it with the time you save. It imports your online bank transactions right into the register so there’s not a lot of re-typing.

SaneBox This one will change your email experience by making it sane again-a lot faster than by organizing and checking a bunch of folders yourself. There are even timed folders like @SaneNextWeek and @SaneTomorrow that will make your emails re-appear when you’re ready to deal with them, says Lavinsky.

Some day in the not too distant future, America will dip its corners deeper into the ocean, the waves ever grinding at its shores as tectonic plates shift and sink. The effect of melting icecaps on the beaches of her native Long Island is one of the triggers for Laura Stevenson’s worrying mind, as she struggles with the overwhelming notions of an infinite universe and the imminence of her own death. Obsessive musings on these subjects has led her to describe herself as an “unfunny Woody Allen,” though friends and fans might disagree, finding plenty of humor in her introspective and self-deprecating nature. The repetition of these existential questions is the driving force behind Wheel, an album brimming with life and death in the desperate search for what keeps us turning in the face of doubt, an exercise in coming to terms with the overwhelming beauty that can be found in the lack of an answer. – Laura Stevenson was born and raised on Long Island into a family of mariners and music makers. She spent many of her younger days on the sugar barges of NY harbor with her father and uncles, who all made their living on the water, at one time running one of the largest fleets on the Hudson. Meanwhile, her mother’s parents were successful musicians; Harry Simeone, the composer and choral arranger responsible for such works as “The Little Drummer Boy” and “Do You Hear What I Hear?” and Margaret McCravy (stage name McCrae), a singer from South Carolina who got her start accompanying her elder siblings “The McCravy Brothers,” a harmonious gospel folk duo, before continuing on her own to record and tour with bandleader Benny Goodman. Armed with her grandfather’s love for modernist dissonance, a genetic predisposition for harmony, and with her sea legs firmly planted in the traditions of American folk singing, Stevenson began creating melodies at a very young age. “My mom would find me in my room, looking out the window, out at the street, singing by myself, sometimes crying,” she laughs, “I was a weird kid.” At around five Stevenson began playing piano by ear, and at that point her mother decided lessons were a sound investment for the young musician. In High School between going to punk shows every weekend, she spent her afternoons singing in four different choral groups, exploring a growing love for acapella. “Big time nerd stuff,” as she recalls, lamenting that there wasn’t a show like Glee around to validate her when she was in the thick of it. Hundreds of hours of extra-curricular singing combined with a natural talent has no doubt paid dividends when it comes to Stevenson’s powerful vocals. The confidence and precision with which she unabashedly sings out on record and on stage stands in sharp contrast with the reflective uncertainty and isolation that comes through in her lyrics. Though Stevenson began writing classically on piano early on, it wasn’t until her late teens that she taught herself how to fingerpick the guitar, aspiring to have the quickness and intricacy of her “guitar god,” Dolly Parton. The new instrument opened up a window of creativity and Stevenson soon began writing songs heavily influenced by the writers her father had raised her on, such as Neil Young, Gram Parsons, and Carole King, while also drawing inspiration from music that she discovered on her own like Leonard Cohen, and Jeff Mangum. Meanwhile, leaving her comfort zone, Stevenson started playing in friends’ bands in and around Long Island, a time that she says, “taught me how to be on tour, how to give and take with other musicians, and not be afraid of my own ideas.” With a new found confidence and a solid and supportive community of creative people behind her, Stevenson moved to Brooklyn in her early 20s and soon started performing her own material, loosely assembling a backing band of friends from other projects. In 2010, she released her bare-bones full-length debut simply entitled, A Record, which she quickly followed the year after with Sit Resist, the first solid document of her work playing with a full band. Those two albums and a healthy amount of touring brought Stevenson a dedicated fan base, drawn to her voice, her words, and her relatable down-to-earth persona. While writing the 13 songs that make-up her newest record, Wheel, Stevenson sought to understand her place within the frame of time, nature, and among those that she loves. With her words, a careful twine of prose and humor, Stevenson manages to expose the nagging contradictions that make life so terrifying but also so worth living, how it is possible to simultaneously feel both fear and joy, the bitter aftertaste of something so beautiful it makes you sick. Themes of passage, the cycle of the moon, the seasons, and love’s ever-shifting states of dependence, are all interwoven throughout Wheel as songs ebb and flow from her band’s crashing walls of distortion and pounding drums, to sweet string-led overtures, to moments where it is just Stevenson and a guitar. In recording Wheel, Stevenson decided to up the production value, steering away from the lo-fi approach of her previous two albums. Forcing herself to fully give-in to the recording process, and relinquish some of creative control she enlisted producer, Kevin McMahon, someone whose work she respected immensely and who would, as she put it, “be the perfect set of ears for these songs.” She also brought in Rob Moose on violin and Kelly Pratt to play brass, adding their own layers of depth to the band’s full arrangements. Despite the move to sleeker production, Wheel retains its organic nature, relying primarily on the resonance of acoustic instruments and the electricity of simply over-driven amplifiers, with its most synthetic moment coming from a Roland organ, an unconscious decision that Stevenson explains as her and her band’s way of “being real, relying on each other’s energy to keep time and just playing the songs like human beings, flaws and all.”

Japandroids is a two piece band from Vancouver, BC. This 'band' started in 2006 and consists of Brian King and David Prowse. Originally intending to be a trio, the boys decided to forego the logistical nightmare of having a 'lead singer' and do it themselves. As a consequence, Japandroids are one guitar, one set of drums, and two vocalizers. Japandroids are maximal – a two piece band trying to sound like it's a five piece band. Their 'songs' run the gauntlet of rock & roll subgenres, with the boys ripping off too many different bands to sound like any other duo making music right now. After self-releasing two EPs, 2007's All Lies and 2008's Lullaby Death Jams, Japandroids released their critically acclaimed debut album Post-Nothing via Polyvinyl in 2009. The boys toured extensively throughout 2009–2010, playing over 200 shows in more than 20 countries, and quickly gained notoriety for their extremely energetic live performances. Finding it difficult to write and record a second album in the midst of such a heavy touring schedule, Japandroids released a series of 7'' singles throughout 2010, each one recorded during a brief interval between tours. The same year, Japandroids re-released their first two EPs as a compilation titled No Singles, which included a booklet detailing their early history. 5 long years in 2 short paragraphs. Not bad. Perhaps the most pertinent detail omitted from said paragraphs is the fact that at no point during this time did Brian and David even discuss the possibility of writing, let alone recording, a second Japandroids album. With the band having more or less imploded late in 2008 (after what was considered to be a valiant but ultimately fruitless effort), one single regret still lingered, and despite their wounds and subsequent estrangement, continued effortlessly to slander them and their attempts to move on, like the subtle scent of skin on the sheets days after the desecration. Ipso facto, the sole motivation for revisiting the band many months later was simply to see if they could exploit their sudden newfound internet popularity and take Japandroids on the road. Due in part to the unexpected (and untimely) discovery of the band early in 2009 by certain online entities and their congregations, what previously seemed reserved for only the most ardent hearts, presented itself to Japandroids like a deal from the devil himself. Cautiously seduced, Brian and David decided in favour of their romantic notions of the open road, and set upon a crusade to swindle the soul of a continent. Tour was the fire to which they fed themselves. As days became weeks, so too did months become years. Finally, having exhausted themselves, as well as the immediate charm of Post-Nothing, and with only one final recording session looming on the horizon, the boys found themselves at a crossroads. Would they abandon their days on the wind and nights on the rocks in favour of the gentle lull of a geographic coma? No one knew; not even the boys themselves. That is, until one cool New York night, when under the spell of the city's swill, they cast off the demons of doubt, having come in through the out door, back out through the window. For months, they laboured. Through the endless rains and windless chills of a northwestern winter, Japandroids fought tirelessly against their own creative limitations, struggling to expand their sound beyond the simple sloganeering that dominated Post-Nothing. Stuck knee deep in the swamp of summer, time had chased them down, and caught them waiting patiently. Had it not been for the fever of fall, with the boys back on tour where they belong, all might have been lost. Run out of town, they vowed not to return in anything less than triumph. Settling under the sulfurous skies of the south, Japandroids continued to labour through the dying months of 2011, returning reluctantly with nothing short of an album. As with countless previous recording sessions, the boys would bestow their faith solely upon Heaven's native son, Jesse Gander. An inexhaustible rocket of patience and dedication, Gander's unique ability to build cathedrals out of criminals was pushed to its absolute limit, as Brian and David demanded he coax only the purest nectar from their delinquent hearts. And so he did: "Let's make this one a little more cruising down the highway, and a little less doing crystal meth on New Year's…" "That take was the perfect mixture of pee and poo – it had the fluidity of pee, and the solidness of poo…" And so on and so forth, until not even the deepest and darkest of nights could extinguish what can only be described as living fireworks. Celebration Rock – a title in and of itself so controversial that at first utterance, it was so feared and hated that Polyvinyl felt compelled to plead for an alternative. But the band would not yield. Hell was just going to have to come and get them. So there you have it. 1 year, 8 songs, 35 mins. Not bad. As for everything else, I've got no answers. Any questions? Triathlete and long-distance runner Wade Bergner made a career out of selling books to the schools across the state of Wisconsin for 20 years. Wade was raised in a family of health conscious and running enthusiasts, being healthy was a family affair. When looking for his next great business opportunity, it made sense to looking at Fresh Healthy Vending, as he was already familiar with the schools and wanting an opportunity to support the greater good.

Wade lives in the small town of Maiden Rock, Wisconsin and travels to various locations in the surrounding areas to support the Fresh Healthy Vending franchise he has built. The natural foods are very popular. I get asked all the time, Are you the guy that brought in the machines with all this great food? Previously snacks were not allowed, the students and staff are grateful to have the natural vending choices available, Bergner said.

Since many of the small-town and rural-area students are not familiar with the quality and variety of the products available in the machines, he holds product sampling events. We work with our locations to hold the events for times that work for the schools, we sample out the foods and the drinks too, said Bergner. The machines are on timers to accommodate the schools breakfast and lunch programs and a percent of the money goes back to the schools. The Fresh Healthy Vending machines are stocked with all-natural, organic and preservative-free snacks and beverages. These nutritious selections make healthy choices easier for the students.

Becki Davis is the Principal at Chippewa Falls High School. She has been with the school for 15 years, but her history with CFHS is longer than that; This is her hometown and the high school that she attended. Becki is pleased to report The school has two Fresh Healthy Vending machines, one in the commons area adjacent to the main entrance where the kids get off the bus and the other near the big gym and locker room.

In March 2013, she was introduced to the concept when she received an email from Fresh Healthy Vending. I thought to myself, ‘There are no good reasons NOT to try this.’ It sounded good, she said. The maintenance and refilling is all taken care of and a percentage of the money goes back to the school.”

Were not a big city, and do not have health food stores around. But the students were familiar with the products and excited to have them available, she noted. She was taken back by how encouraging the students were in welcoming and embracing the food selections. Not only did they know about the products, but they were grateful to have them available. Within the first few weeks she received many positive responses and thank yous from students.

They had a familiarity with the products, things like coconut water. Its a great idea to provide the really healthy options, Davis said, and to be able to offer things that they should be eating and drinking. The products are always fresh, and the machines are always full. Wade is here every other day to fill the machines. Everything is taken care of by Fresh Healthy Vending and its totally trouble free for the school. The machines take check cards too, so thats convenient.

Its good to be able to have choices available for the kids after school in music, theater and athletics. A protein shake is a healthy snack thats not sugar-laced or full of empty calories, Davis noted. Its part of doing what is right for the kids that attend the school.

St. Croix Central High School in Hammond Wisconsin has one machine located in the commons area near the main entrance. Nic Been is the Athletic Director, as a health concsience person himself is happy not to have energy drinks, pop or candy available for the students.

Originally Wade contacted me about putting a machine on campus. I talked to people I knew at other schools in the area to see how the machines were working out, Been said. This machine gets consistent use all day long. The kids will have a healthy snack and then head into the weight room.

Wade takes care of the machines himself. Its great for the kids that are here for after-school activities because they can get something that will sustain them when other food options arent available.

Bergner is happy with the way the products and machines have been welcomed in the area. They like the snacks because they are healthier, and they taste good too, he said. Building a network of sites that link to a company’s offerings increases the power to reach people and create profit. The items listed below are not necessarily steps that must be conducted in order, but rather elements that work simultaneously.

1. Develop Website Content

SEO is an important factor in online content management. Keywords are words and phrases that people use to search the web, and they should be built into the content throughout the website. Post new content at least once a month, including updates, information, articles, and resources that will compel people to want to visit the site. Keeping the content fresh will attract repeat visitors.

2. Search Engine Submissions

Each search engine provides a place to submit website URLs for consideration to be recognized by their robots. There is no formula to guarantee that any site will be placed at the top of the list for any particular keyword, however, using the strategies in this article, will increase the odds for getting a desired spot. Submit It is a great resource for submitting websites to several search engines at once. Test a site’s ranking by using tools such as Google’s PageRank. 3. Link Exchange Program

However, these sales micro-sites do not necessarily draw traffic; drive traffic to them. What Henczel suggests here is to develop online resources that are packed with information and tips about a specific topic and link to the microsites, linking the value of the offerings.

8. Advertising and PPC

Start getting visitors and potential customers today with these strategies! Drive traffic to a website right away with pay-per-click (PPC) advertising through services such as Google Adwords. Sign up for account, create a small ad and it is placed onto other content relevant sites and in search results. For off-line marketing and advertising, include the website on letterhead, postcards, business cards, thank you cards, holiday cards, and promotional items.

9. Participate in Social Media

Social media is considered the driving force behind the Web 2.0 movement. It allows people to interact with site owners, comment on articles, contribute to site content, and participate in creating and re-creating media, and ultimately, network with other people. Basically we’re talking about forms of consumer generated media (CGM) and consumer generated content (CGC) such as blogs, podcasting, video casting, wiki, social networking, and social book-marking. Messages are distributed through RSS, which stands for Real Simple Syndication, and subscribers read them using services such as Bloglines. To take advantage of this technology to generate traffic to a website, create an account at sites such as Facebook, Linked In, Youtube, iFilm, Technorati, StumbleUpon, Del.icio.us,

10. Create an Online Newsletter or Ezine

Urgent! Before anything else, start collecting email addresses from clients. Then by the time everything else is set up, a good opt-in subscriber list will be developed. Email marketing is proven to provide the best ROI (Return on Investment) than any other marketing available. It offers the lowest cost method for reaching an audience with the most impact. Amazingly, this strategy produces both short term and long term results, if produced consistently. A regular bi-weekly distribution is recommended. Henczel suggests using a digest format that involves placing a title and brief paragraph, description, or summary into the newsletter which then links to the full content on the website.

We host Networking Events every other Thursday, from 5:30 to 8PM. We regularly have cover, 1 complimentary drink, 100+ people, photographers, charity organizations with display tables, Professional Style Awards, a Networking Card activity, co-hosts, videographers, and more.

Preregister (required) with your full name, email address, phone number and business category through our Eventbrite invitation system. We share that information with the host venue and any named co-host of the event. Sign in at the event registration table when you arrive, put on a name badge, get a drink ticket and then go network. Please follow up after the event with feedback or a testimonial on our website.

Social networking includes developing relationships for charity work, making new friendships, finding people with common interests or hobbies, and discussing current events, entertainment or the arts. Professional networking includes building relationships with potential employees, employers, vendors, partners, clients, customers and most importantly, potential referral sources. Professional networking also includes discussing the economy, business management, marketing, finance, technology for business and more. A few people attend our events only for social networking and a few people attend only for professional networking. However, most people attend for both.

- Invite some of your most trusted and respected professional contacts. Pre-register and forward our emailed invitations. Use the "Select Guests to Invite" link on our Facebook invitations. Consider including the message “I saw this event and thought of you.”
- Bring business cards with your name, business name, phone number and email address. If you don’t have a business card with all of this information, please get some.
- Please bring your own name badge to use multiple times to save time, money and the environment. Please add your business name or business category to your name badge.
- Dress Professionally. It feels good to look great. Dressing well helps you and our group. Venues and business owners often mention the way the whole crowd looks and how important that is. Think boardroom, not nightclub. Professional attire only, please.
- Volunteer as Greeters, Photographer, Videographer, Entertainers, Promoters, Ambassadors and more. Please contact us to volunteer ASAP so we can find a role you will enjoy.
- We allow charity organizations to set up promotional display tables at the events for no charge. Please contact us to get approval.
- We want each venue to want us back. The venues provide the space and the complimentary drink for no charge to the group. Please make positive comments to the managers and owners and consider buying additional food and drink, booking your own event, and coming back another night. Tell them you are there because of PSNG.
- Tip the wait staff well. A free drink should lead to a bigger tip than normal. Bring Dollars. The excuse "I don't have any singles on me" is unacceptable. Please tip for water and soda too. Tip staff at the bar and out in the crowd. If you don't plan to tip, please don't plan to come. If your beliefs or financial situation preclude you from tipping generously, please do not attend.
- Introduce yourself and others to anyone who looks like they want to meet people. Some people are less outgoing than you are. Let’s all try to make new attendees and quieter people feel welcome. Ask questions and listen.
- Expect to be approached by some people for business and by some people for socializing. We ask each guest to be respectful of all people, no matter what purpose they are attending the event to achieve. Even if you can't provide what they want, you may be able to give them encouragement, advice or a referral.
- Gentlemen, please be aware that we ask women to name the men that make them feel uncomfortable. If your name comes up too often we will quietly ask you to leave and not return to our events. Ladies, please make note and let us know what you think we should. In almost 4 years this has only happened twice. We consistently have very respectful group of people.
- Please use the “Invite People to Join” link on our Facebook group page to invite friends to join. Members can learn about our group and events.
- All the people helping at the registration table are volunteers who are there to have fun and make a great event. Please compliment and thank them.
- Develop real relationships at the events. Be curious, kind, complimentary, thoughtful, respectful, helpful, warm, friendly, genuine, positive and sincere. Smile )

The roller rink is cracked. Summer is seeping in. The lacquered floor boards are all warped, but the disco ball spins. Ladies and gentlemen, Black Moth Super Rainbow has left the woods, and the man called Tobacco lords over a gang of demon skaters from the DJ booth of some greased up auditorium in a lost corner of Pittsburg. The band’s fifth LP Cobra Juicy declares death to hippies, excising all things flower power and tightening up what sprawl there was into a nastily bright pile of fuzzed guitar, live bass, hot synths and stubby rhythms—eleven pieces of hard candy licked, dipped in dirt, and wrapped up for you.

There nearly wasn’t a new Black Moth record at all. In hindsight, 2009’s Eating Us seemed too soft, too ‘70s. Tobacco felt he’d lost control of his main project’s sound and so focused on “solo” work. But while crafting 2010’s depraved beat beast Maniac Meat, he found himself writing more freely, rediscovering the sickly sour to Black Moth’s sweet. Then he realized, fuck it, this thing is his baby anyhow. He cleaned house on the live band—now Seven Fields of Aphelion, Iffernaut, Ryan Graveface and Bullsmear—and got to work, alone, on a brand new BMSR album. Then he threw that one away and made Cobra Juicy.

Opener “Windshield Smasher” lays down the difference with a hefty thud. The grinding electric guitar and smacking drumbeat play like de-glammed arena metal before the gooped-up electronics arrive. It’s a more aggressively skewed pop, instantly followed by the drop-top drift of “Like a Sundae,” whose melted melodies ride atop a sturdy bed of modern blips and bloops. “Hairspray Heart” is another early highlight, boasting a thickly Rick Rubinesque beat while Tobacco wickedly chants, “I can hypnotize you.” Later, “Gangs in the Garden” splices ‘80s robo-pop with DFA dance for more beautifully upbeat violence.

The aptly named “Dreamsicle Bomb” is glassy and gorgeous, its reverbed notes and shuffling drums eventually clarifying in a bassy breakdown suggestive of Matthew Dear’s productions. “Smash all the mailboxes and headlights,” Tobacco whispers in a snakelike sibilance, while “Spraypaint” is surprisingly sweet— a love song Black Moth style.

In some ways, Cobra Juicy is the most personal Black Moth Super Rainbow record yet. In other ways, it kinda just wants you to get out there, strap on some wheels, sew a back-patch onto a denim vest, and start a Warriors-style gang tailored to whatever overheated dystopia you call home in 2012. The album will be self-released and funded via Kickstarter, where fans will be able to purchase Cobra Juicy in actual mask form—a latex rictus modeled after the possessed citrus on the cover, music on a USB tooth jammed into the grinning maw. ALOHA Mind Math student and New Jersey first grader Matthew Flanders combined his love of math with his desire to help feed the hungry. Using his gifts in math to help others in need, Matthew raised $ 50 for UMCOR by challenging individuals at his Somerville, NJ church to a math race, who can get the answer faster, Matthew with his ALOHA mental math or the child or adult with or without a calculator; Matthew won every time. In this unique way, Matthew Flanders raised $ 50 for UMCOR, United Methodist Committee on Relief, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to alleviating human suffering around the globe: http://www.umcor.org.

Matthew loves to share his ALOHA Mind Math skills whenever he can, and he came up with the idea to use his gifts in math to help others in need. In late April, He created a poster to invite folks to “challenge” him to the best of five math races. Arithmetic equations were written on a white board, then Matthew and his challenger would “race” to calculate the answer first. He had some middle school students as well as many adults compete. Without fail, Matthew would arrive at the correct answer, often times before the other person had made the first calculation of the series. It was a great way to share what he learned at the ALOHA Mind Math learning center. Everyone was eager to hear his story— and play with the abacus! He set his poster up after church on two Sundays in late April, having an average of 40 people pass his table.

The academic enrichment programs provided by ALOHA Mind Math gives kids life-long skills, through their elementary school programs. Fourth corner. Physically, it's where four states in the U.S. come together at one singular point. Symbolically, it's where the four great rivers in China come together as one. Or, it could be the cycle of life during the four seasons of the year. For Trixie Whitley, it's a metaphor for trying to find balance and belonging from the songs that make up her scintillating debut album, Fourth Corner. Whitley burst into public consciousness in 2011 as the lead singer of Black Dub, super-­‐producer Daniel Lanois' (U2, Bob Dylan) project, blowing people away with a voice and presence beyond her now-­‐25 years. And it's that voice: an emotional, blues-­‐drenched instrument that ranges from a lilting slap to a knock-­‐you-­‐backwards uppercut. On Fourth Corner, Whitley explores the range of human emotion in another set of four: utter love, total rage, unadulterated happiness, and crippling loneliness. "It's those elements of life I keep coming back to," she says. "Both as a person and musically as well." Recorded in New York with producer/keyboardist Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman, who's also worked with Glen Hansard, Antony and the Johnsons, Grizzly Bear and the National) engineer Pat Dillett (David Byrne, St. Vincent, Mary J. Blige), and string arrangements by Rob Moose (Antony, Bon Iver), aching songs like "Need Your Love" have Whitley working from a spare beginning that explodes into a blossom dripping with pleading vocals and delicate piano. On tracks like the sassy "Irene" and the sinister "Hotel No Name," Whitley lays down a snarling guitar line on top of scuzzy beats while her voice veers from defiant to remorseful. It's a tantalizing mix of sounds that can come only from someone who says: "I'm from everywhere but have never felt like I belong." Whitley lived a nomadic life: born in Belgium, she split her time growing up there and in New York but also frequently visiting family in France, Texas, and Mexico. Her mother came from an artistic European gypsy family, filled with musicians, painters, writers, and sculptures, while her father, renowned singer-­‐songwriter Chris Whitley, thrust her into the world of music as a toddler when she joined him onstage in Germany at age three. After her parents divorced, she returned to her mother's native Belgium and became engrossed in the arts: she played drums, acted and sang with several theater companies, and toured Europe with the renowned dance company Les Ballets C de la B and choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. At the same time, she became the youngest resident DJ at the Belgium Museum of Modern Art at age 11, spinning the likes of Aphex Twin and Squarepusher to old school Hip Hop, African music to avant garde composer John Zorn. "At first the Museum thought it was kind of a joke: 'Come see our 11-­‐year-­‐old DJ,'" she laughs. "But then people kept coming. I couldn't beat mix at all and I had to stand on three beer crates to even see the turntables!" Though Whitley explores the gamut of human emotion in her music, there's a sense of fearlessness in her that is unwavering. She dropped out of school at 17 and moved back to New York and started slinging burgers at a local dive. Meanwhile, she ground out her own material in the city. She learned piano, guitar and soon started playing solo shows, a preface to recording her first EP Strong Blood. With that EP in hand, she and her mother went to a music festival in Belgium where Daniel Lanois was playing a gig with drummer Brian Blade, best known for his work with Joni Mitchell and Wayne Shorter. At her mother's behest, she thrust a copy of Strong Blood into Lanois' hand and returned to New York, thinking nothing would ever come of it. "I went back to that shitty restaurant and it got to the point where I was going to ditch music and go back to school and get my GED," says Whitley. "But when I got home that day, Daniel called. I screamed." Lanois invited her to Boston to record. He was so blown away that he asked her to front Black Dub, working with Blade and bassist Daryl Johnson. The band's self-­‐titled album was released in October of 2010 and the group toured well into 2011, with Whitley's voice propelling the group's unique groove to ultimate peaks. With the Black Dub shows, countless solo gigs in New York and Europe, and buzz-­‐ building performances at festivals like Bonnaroo, SXSW, and Celebrate Brooklyn, Whitley has become one of the most talked about new artists of 2012. In November/December 2012, she embarked on her first solo U.S. tour, and currently continues to tour Europe and the US in anticipation of Fourth Corner's 2013 release. "I'm psyched and petrified," says Whitley in her archetypal wide-­‐eyed wonderment mixed with a fierce determination. "As a songwriter, I want to go to places people don't expect and with that is complete freedom of expression." Perhaps that place is another version of a fourth corner: something spiritual perhaps, certainly emotional, but most definitely real.

"My initial meeting with Rocco – It was pure and centered and seemed to have a sense of purpose, and I felt that there was something burning in his heart that I could be helpful to. It had that kind of truth in it that I decided to run with. I like the street corner aspect of working with Rocco, it woke up a certain part of my renegade ways I'm trying to keep alive these days. I fully believe in DeLuca. I think that he's got the power to be a contemporary troubadour, as I see it, and I hope I can be his friend for a long time, whether I am operating in the same limelight, ahead of him, behind him, in his shadow, whatever it takes, I'll be there. The one thing that I love about Rocco DeLuca is he is driven by his own heart." – Daniel Lanois Rocco Deluca was born in the winter in Southern California. Like other Angelenos he was surrounded by local literature, Latino art, motorcycles, film and music. His early years were spent studying the likes of Billy Holiday and Nina Simone as well as the darker and raw Delta Blues heroes of the 1920's. At the age of seven, he taught himself to play listening to these records. By the time he was a teenager, Rocco had developed the skills and the confidence to start performing for others. For the first few years, he played only specific instruments. It wasn't until later he discovered he had a voice. Street busking, clubs, theatres and festivals, Rocco has performed around the world many times over with his 1931 National by his side. His authentic and unusual lyric and voice has since garnered him international attention and acclaim. Rocco has had the good fortune to cross paths with and gain inspiration from various legends. John Lee Hooker gave DeLuca the opportunity to support his live shows. And later, Johnny Cash and June Carter were kind enough to invite him into their Hendersonville home, where values and excellence were displayed. Most recently, Deluca was recorded by and toured with Daniel Lanois, where he learned great lessons in work and experimentation. After extensive travel from Kingston to London to the deserts of Texas and California, Rocco has placed his recent stories into a collection called Drugs 'n Hymns. Sifting through failures, cities, friendships, and geographic shapes, Rocco conjured images that were documented live in a room no bigger than a closet, with some help from the Echo Park Jubilee Tambo Flower Unsung Heroes Choir. Drugs 'n Hymns is the culmination of detailed moments inspired by both the illuminated and the disturbed, unfolding into a drug deal that takes place during the Sacred Service- Always in conflict with salvation and sin, the cerebral and the bestial, light and shade. Rocco's love of contradiction is ever present. Inspired by 'religion', literature and experience, DeLuca takes the listener on a pilgrimage, a forever evolving search for salvation.

GL Communications Inc. announced today the release of its latest product Long Term Evolution (LTE) Emulator for X2 Interface.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Jagdish Vadalia Senior Manager for product development of the company said, Long Term Evolution is the all packet architecture that mobile networks are in the process of transitioning. It will permit vastly higher data rates to mobile smartphones, making voice, video, and data truly integrated for the first time thru a single access technology. In simple terms, LTE consists of a Packet Core and a network of eNodeBs (as shown below). eNodeBs have two interfaces, the X2 interface permits eNodeBs to talk to each other directly, and the S1 interface permits talking to the Packet Core.

He added, GL has introduced LTE X2 Interface Emulation to test and verify eNodeB implementations through its MAPS architecture. GL’s Message Automation & Protocol Simulation (MAPS) is a multi-protocol, multi-technology platform used for the emulation of a variety of communication protocols over IP, TDM, and Wireless networks. MAPS can be used to test signaling over legacy networks (such as CAS, SS7, ISDN, PPP and more), IP networks (such as SIP, MGCP, MEGACO, SIGTRAN, Diameter) and also the Wireless technologies including GSM, UMTS, and LTE networks. Recently LTE X2-AP has been introduced.

Mr.Vadalia further added, GL’s MAPS X2 Application Protocol (X2-AP) Interface Emulator is used to co-ordinate handovers and perform load management between eNodeB (Evolved Node B) network elements – Source eNodeB and Target eNodeB. The MAPS X2-AP test tool is designed with specific test cases, as per LTE 3GPP mobile standards. It supports powerful utilities like Message Editor, Script Editor, and Profile Editor which allow new scenarios to be created or existing scenarios to be modified using messages and parameters.

New research from M.A.R.C Research and the Google Shopper Council has revealed that 79% of smartphone owners are smart smartphone shoppers and that 84% of these mobile shoppers are now using their phones to help with shopping in physical stores according to their report entitled Mobile In-Store Research: How in-store shoppers are using mobile devices published May 9.

The average time smartphone shoppers used their phones in store was 15 minutes, with the majority used for appliances (97%). This was followed by groceries (89%), baby care (87%) and electronics (97%).

Consumers use mobile search as the number one in-store resource to help make purchase decisions, and mobiles were primarily used for price comparison (53%).

En esta ocasión, tu serás parte de la producción, y harás las fotografías que elevarán el nivel de tu portafolio, te abrirán las puertas a nuevos contratos, y harán que de repente tengas mas amigas, porque todas van a querer que les tomes unas fotos así.

¿A quien está dirigido?

Este shooting está dirigido a fotógrafos amateurs, semi-profesionales y profesionales, que estén interesados en aprender técnicas de la fotografía fashion.

También es una oportunidad muy útil para quienes siendo profesionales de la fotografía, deseen agregar a su portafolio la versatilidad de tener modelos de talla internacional.

Este curso no es para aprender a manejar la cámara, ni tampoco te vamos a enseñar como montar tu negocio de fotografía. Aquí vas a venir a tomar fotos, y te vamos a decir como hacerle.

Objetivo del taller:

El participante entenderá y dominará los aspectos sobresalientes de la fotografía de moda. Comprenderá técnicas de montaje en studio y en locación, así como iluminación. De manera muy especial podrá crear su propio photoshoot con Modelo internacional. Un factor de gran peso en su book.

El workshop se imparte en Monterrey, NL; México

No te asustes ni te confundas: este worskshop no es de esos aburridos que te meten en un salón a escuchar a un perico hablar de fotos. Aquí estaremos en los sets más enigmáticos del hotel para convertirlos en nuestra locación. Es un hotel con más de 100 años de historia. Ahora es tu turno de hacer parte de esa historia.

Acerca de Modelos:

En este taller estamos abriendo la puerta por primera vez a fotógrafas que deseen tomar fotos a un Top Model masculino. Si el quorum de 6 fotógrafas se completa, ellas podrán decidir mediante votación si prefieren tener modelo Mujer o modelo Varón. Nuestro casting está preparado para la alternativa que ellas escojan.

Para el caso de fotógrafos, nos vamos a ahorrar la votación y ya tenemos nuestras modelos mujeres.

Las fotos que aparecen en esta ficha informativa corresponden a modelos que han participado en talleres previos, así como algunos talentos que están listos para ser parte del taller.

¿Porqué Top Model?

Si ya has trabajado con Modelos de nivel Top, ya sabes la respuesta. Ya sabes lo que una modelo de talla internacional puede aportar a un photoshoot. También sabes lo difícil que es contar con la oportunidad de trabajar con ellas en la ciudad de Monterrey. Sus contratos generalmente se firman en DF o en las grandes ciudades del mundo.

Si nunca has tenido la oportunidad de trabajar con una modelo de esta talla, por primera vez vas a poder sentir la dinámica de “Click-Pose-Click”. Ellas te dan las poses, tu solo haces tus shots. Tus fotos toman de inmediato un nivel muy distinto al que has estado acostumbrado.

On May 12, Angel Flight West (AFW) volunteer pilot and board member, Charlie Finkel, a 62-year-old aviation attorney and private pilot, will embark on a bucket list bike ride from Manhattan Beach to Bostonapproximately 3,400 milesto raise funds and awareness for the nonprofit. Angel Flight West arranges free non-emergency air travel for children and adults with serious medical conditions and other compelling needs. Mr. Finkel has been flying such missions for two decades.

Cycling has been my hobby and passion since childhood, so has flying. I have been very fortunate to have been able to engage in both. As a pilot, I have been able to pay back some of my blessings by twenty years of membership in Angel Flight West, Mr. Finkel said.

In the first few days following the announcement of his plans, Mr. Finkel garnered pledges exceeding $ 10,000. He hopes to complete this fund-raising effort by June 28.

I have been very fortunate to be able to enjoy the physical ability, good health and financial security. Unfortunately, all too many suffer illnesses, disabilities and a lack of resources preventing them from obtaining all the help they need. Fortunately, Angel Flight West helps to overcome those hardships, Mr. Finkel said.

He has transported burned children to summer camps, and has flown missions for cancer patients, wounded soldiers and others with a wide variety of needs. He said, I particularly associate with the burn victims, having spent two months of suffering in a burn ward myself, and then having to overcoming the hurdles of rehabilitation.

Mr. Finkel plans regular Facebook updates, thanks to a bike-mounted GPS that will show the route, elevation gains, miles, speeds and a satellite view of the daily route. He hopes to cover an average of 85 miles per day and said, Knowing that every mile I pedal will assist Angel Flight West will do more than any tailwind or downhill stretch to help me on my way.

Angel Flight Wests network includes 1,200 volunteer pilots throughout the 13 western states who donate their aircraft, piloting skills and all flying costs to help those in need receive vital treatment that might be otherwise inaccessible because of financial, medical or geographic limitations. The Mountain Goats

Biographical details that I have personally observed regarding John Darnielle and the Mountain Goats Submitted by John Hodgman John Darnielle is a human male and American musician who was born in Indiana. Alone or in collaboration with others, he has been known as the Mountain Goats since 1991. He grew up in Central California, and has lived in many states, but now lives in North Carolina with his wife and child and at least one cat that I have observed. I visited his home in the year 2011. I took off my shoes when I came in the door because that is my habit. No one made me do it. John Darnielle's house is not rockstar huge, nor rockstar glamorous. It does not have a home theater or rolfing center. It's modest. There is an office packed with shelves reflecting his preoccupations: pulp horror and philosophy and religious study. John Darnielle is fascinated with both death metal and the Holy Bible and speaks eloquently of the dark magic and elegance and grace of both. Now I am going to tell you that, in the study by the stairs, I stepped in a little bit of cat vomit. I can report that John Darnielle was not embarrassed. Because he knows it is in a cat's nature to vomit, and because he saw an opportunity for kindness. He loaned me some socks, and they were argyle, warm from the dryer and very soft. The house has a basement, which John Darnielle describes as "awesome." The basement is not particularly awesome. (I have seen some awesome basements.) It has some drums and guitars in it but otherwise is a fairly typical basement of a modest, middle-class home. Normal. It is my impression that this may be why John Darnielle considers his basement to be awesome, for such normality was not necessarily going to be his fate. Inside the basement is a box of a limited-edition, alternate vinyl version of his album The Sunset Tree, which came out in 2005. Each one is hand-painted by John: white sleeve traced with naïve snakes and swirls of bright color. John Darnielle told me that he made these when things were going well in his career, but he was still not convinced he was going to make it…when he still thought he might have to go back to psychiatric nursing, which is what he did when he started writing and recording songs. Those first recordings, you may have read, were made on a simple cassette recorder. And those tapes of just him plus guitar are full of hiss and urgency. They were made for one reason. Like these hand-painted LPs, even if all else failed, they were going to get out there, no matter what. He has written almost 600 songs now, and some of them are very sad, dealing with hard drugs and tragic ends, hurting yourself and others, sicknesses of both body and brain, off-brand alcohols. They are told in beautiful, unnerving, specific detail, because John Darnielle is a very good writer, and also some of them are just true stories about his own life. But many have noted that John Darnielle seems often very happy, and his demeanor on stage is almost exclusively unhaunted, ecstatic. Anyone who reads his Twitter feed knows he takes great delight in his delights: vegan cooking, fat babies, hockey, the beautiful alchemy of Chemex coffee, Anonymous 4, playing music for people, loaning out socks when the time comes, basements. These are the consolations; and if some of his songs suggest that there are real hells on earth, other songs remind that the heavens are equally close at hand. (Sometimes they are even the same songs.) It is my impression that this is the ecstasy John Darnielle is feeling: that thrill of having survived, escaped for even a second to enjoy those small transcendent delights, and to sing of them. And I can report that if you are standing in the basement with John Darnielle and wondering how he survived this far, to stand happy in this heavenly basement, you may look down at the hand-painted album of songs you are holding and realize the answer is in your hand. Like that album, TRANSCENDENTAL YOUTH is full of songs about people who madly, stupidly, blessedly won't stop surviving, no matter who gives up on them. I can report that it is a very good album and has many more instruments on it than those early tapes, including Peter Hughes on bass, Jon Wurster on drums, and, for the first time, a full horn section. And all of this makes a very joyous noise. Everything I have written here is true, to the best of my knowledge. I am not giving back the socks. That is all. John Hodgman 2012
